Teachers receive lifesaving training from local medical transport company

SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. – Representatives from Coastal Medical Transportation Services (CMTS), a leading medical transportation provider serving Cape Cod & the Islands provided a hands-on CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training course for faculty members at Dennis Yarmouth Regional High School on Wednesday.

The two hour course focused on teaching faculty members the fundamentals of both CPR and using a AED, including quickly identifying life-threatening medical emergencies, proper techniques and certification. Additionally, those in attendance were able to practice what they learned on simulation mannequins.

Wednesday’s event was the first time CMTS has provided training to faculty members at a local school. Representatives from Cape Cod CPR & First Aid Training also provided training and helped to organize the event.

Executive vice president of operations at CMTS, Spero Theohardis, speaks to teachers during Wednesday’s CPR training

“As our company continues to grow, it’s important for us to stay involved and give back to the communities we serve. Many of our team members at CMTS attended Dennis Yarmouth High, or now have kids growing up and attending school within the district . It was an amazing experience to go back and provide this lifesaving training,” said Spero Theohardis, executive vice president of operations at CMTS.

According to the American Heart Association (AHA), at least 383,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year. Effective CPR provided by a bystander can double or triple a victims chance at survival, however only 32 percent of these out-of-hospital cardiac arrest victims receive proper CPR.

Teachers practice chest compression on CPR training devices.

In addition to the CPR and AED training provided by CMTS, the company also provides medical transportation details for each of Dennis Yarmouth High School’s athletic events and continues to welcome students to intern with the company through the work-based learning program offered by the school.

Currently, CMTS has plans to offer additional CPR and AED training for school faculty members.

“Our goal is to increase the availability of this training to a few times per year and get as many faculty members certified within the district as possible,” said Theohardis.
